Sign Language Specialist
Sign Languages
There are 70 million sign language users who do not use a spoken language but a signed one. Although there are an estimated 400 sign languages in the world, only American Sign Language has a complete Bible. Deaf Bibles are in video formats.
For most Deaf people, sign language is the first language they learnt and is their heart language. Many Deaf find it difficult to read as letters correspond to sounds that they have never heard. The grammars of sign languages are also very different from those of spoken languages.
As a Sign Language Specialist, you will work with a team of Deaf signers and others to translate Scripture in sign language, ensuring that it is accurate and clear, and speaks to the heart of a specific Deaf group.

Work as part of a translation team to apply translation principles and procedures.

Facilitate community testing of translated passages to evaluate comprehension.

Develop the capacity of the translation project team members and local institutions to assume responsibility for the translation project in future.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree.
Previous cross-cultural experience is beneficial.
Other training may be required by individual projects.
